April 15, 2007 - Herping the Old Spot

I have sorely been lacking in my "weekly" updates, therefore, will be changing this to monthly updates soon. Let me start out by talking about April 15. We all went on a "Sunday safari" and swung up toward Collage Station to visit a friend who was bitten by a copperhead in late March. We were supposed to pick that particular snake up but it was still at an undisclosed location. We drove over to the Dixie Chicken down the road and hung out and had a "death burger" and enjoyed the sunshine. I also found out why my Christmas card was returned back in 2004 when I sent it to Don Ganter. He passed away in 2004 according to one of the employees working that day. That makes sense, as I had never had one returned before. He owned not only the Dixie Chicken (a frequent hang out when in school there) but also the Chicken Oil Company, Shadow Canyon and several other businesses in the area. I had traded snakes with him back in the day and I see there is still a lone diamondback rattler in the window by the pool tables. I understand he will be removed soon.

We drove on down the road to visit my buddy Frank and his wife in Lyons, then proceeded to one of my favorite snake hunting spots 3.5 miles South of Brenham. I did find one Texas Rat Snake there, but also a for sale sign by a realtor. After looking into this more, the Whitford's (long time members at our church, are asking $720,000 for this 78 acre tract of land. They have owned it since 1961. I have been herping there since 1982. This probably was the last time to ever go there, so I can consider it no longer. This spot has produced snakes virtually every year since I have been going. The bluebonnets in the spring are outstanding as you can see. We will miss going there for sure. Just for the record, I cannot afford to purchase this property but would love too!
