My first exposure to snakes came as a child of seven. My sister and I would find a variety of common snakes in our backyard and in our surrounding neighborhood, such as Hognose snakes, ribbons, and on some instances, water moccasins. Little did she know how this would impact my life. As a teenager, I kept a variety of snakes, from your common garter snakes to boa constrictors.

Kim, who became my wife in 1994, shares my interest in snakes as well as other herps. Her private collection includes a pair of Kenyan Sand Boas Oriental Fire-Bellied Toads, Mantella frogs, a "fantasy" horned frog, leopard geckos, an African fat-tailed gecko, a Uromastyx, bearded dragons and a day gecko.

Our son, Caleb, was born in November 1999. Snakehunting in West Texas is now a family affair. Kim has a fantasy of walking the bottom of a cut and catching a gray-band with Caleb sitting in the toddler backpack. This could easily happen as she has already caught two gray-bands herself -- one on the River Road in 1997 and another on 277 last year. We are really looking forward to the day when Caleb can hold the spotlight and walk the cuts with us!

Our second son, Weston, was born October 18, 2002. He weighed 6 pounds and 2 ounces and measured 20 inches in length. He has long fingers which will enable him to hold a spotlight when we go out to West Texas in the coming years. This means that next snakehunting season, my trusty and reliable Blazer is going to be filled to capacity!

Both Kim and I are active members of the East Texas Herpetological Society. If you are a Herp lover or just someone who loves wildlife, joining a local herpetological society is a good way to meet people that share your interests.
