Hulen
Wayne Howell COLONEL
HULEN WAYNE HOWELL, USAR (Ret.), joined the Final Muster of Fallen
Aggies on Tuesday, April 15, 2003. Hulen was a proud member of the
Texas A&M class of 1956, and a War Hymn Warrior for the Fightin'
Texas Aggie Band, in the Corps of Cadets. He served actively in the
U.S. Army Reserve, commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1957, and retiring
as Colonel, after 32 years. He was born October 29, 1934, in the community
of Williams Chapel, near Wills Point, Texas. He is preceded in death
by his parents, John Emmett Howell and Odell Howell Martin. Hulen's
35-year career with the Timken Company carried him to Chicago and
Lubbock before settling in Houston in 1967. Following his retirement
Hulen worked for Sepco so in truth Hulen was only semi-retired. While
a life-long supporter of all things Aggie, his greatest joy was in
his family. He is survived by Shirley, his great love and wife of
45 years, and his children, Wayne and his wife, Kim, of Houston, and
daughter Brenda and her husband, Hank Slawson of Allen, TX. Of special
joy were his grandchildren, to whom he was known affectionately as
"Grumps" (with Shirley naturally called "Mumps").
Brenda's children, Kelly and Cody enjoyed Grumps for 18 and 12 years,
respectively, while Wayne's boys, Caleb and Weston were just getting
to know their fun-loving grandfather. Hulen's abilities in handling
kids and their crisis' were legendary. Whether it was rescuing Wayne's
wayward alligator from the neighbor's pool, or hauling the seriously
and frequently snake-bitten Wayne to the hospital, he conducted the
operations in the cool manner of the military commander that he was.
All will miss him sorely. Hulen will also be missed by his buddies
down at the American Legion Post 654, where things will never be quite
the same, and the social program has been permanently subdued. His
many interests also included the Reserve Officers Association (Life
Member), the U.S Quartermasters Association, the Houston Live Stock
Show and Rodeo, the Oxford Club, the Retired Officers Association,
the Offshore Energy Center of Houston (Charter Member), and, of course,
The 12th Man Foundation, and the Association of Former Students of
his beloved Texas A&M. His associates in these organizations,
as well as his countless friends, professional pals, happy clients,
and grateful neighbors, will all have their lives diminished by the
absence of The Colonel. A visitation for Hulen's many friends will
be held from 6 to 9 PM at the Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home, 9926
Jones Rd. The funeral services will take place at 1 PM, Friday, April
18, at the John Knox Presbyterian Church, where Hulen and his family
have been members since 1967. Serving as honorary pallbearers will
Ed Lightfoot, Bill Cook, Don McFarland, Ray Davis, Dick Davenport,
Ed Kalisnowski, and Lindley King. Those who will serve as active pallbearers
are Wayne Howell, Bobby Phillips, Ray Neal, Mark Smith, Bruce Wehrle,
and Ed Smith. A military burial is planned for Saturday, April 19,
at 3:00pm in the Haven of Memories Cemetery in Canton, Texas (details
pending). Memorial donations may be made to the Houston Area Parkinson
Society (HAPS). |
